Biography
Shae Xu (pinyin: Xǔ Yǐ) is a Chinese artist and filmmaker based between Shanghai and New York.
Her early literary and photographic works showcase a distinct feminist voice, while her narrative films aim to bridge cultures and ideologies across borders. Xu is a winner of the DGA Student Film Awards for Best Woman Directors, an alumna of Talents Tokyo, and she holds a B.A. in Art History from UC Santa Barbara and an M.F.A in Film Directing from Columbia University.
Xu’s short films have received the support from Indian Paintbrush Production Grant and the Robert Gore Rifkind Queer Grant, and they have been selected for numerous Oscar and BAFTA-qualifying festivals, including Cannes, Rhode Island IFF, and Outfest. In addition to her film work, Xu has published a short story book with Shanghai Culture Press and has held a solo museum exhibition at the Art Pavilion of MoCA Shanghai.
许以生活于上海和纽约两地。她的早期文学和摄影作品展现出鲜明的女权主义声音，她的叙事电影则旨在探索文化与国界间的关联。
许以曾获美国导演工会学生奖（DGA Student Film Awards）最佳女导演，并得到 Indian Paintbrush Production Grant 和 Robert Gore Rifkind Queer Grant 等电影基金会的支持。她参与了 Talents Tokyo 电影训练营，并先后在加州大学艺术历史系取得学士学位、纽约哥伦比亚大学电影导演专业以荣誉硕士学位毕业。她的短片屡次入围国际电影节，包括戛纳、罗得岛国际电影节和Outfest在内的具奥斯卡及英国电影学院奖资格电影节。除电影工作外，许以还与上海文化出版社出版短篇小说集，并在上海当代艺术馆的艺术亭台内举办过个展。
